The 2 biggest technology companies have started to update their website with new information to reflect the appointment of grievance officers under the new law for social media that already came into effect on 26 May.

According to the report of PTI, both tech giants have been agreed and are complying with the rules defined by the Indian government.

As per government sources, according to law, both companies have shared details with the IT ministry of their platforms but Twitter still has not confirmed anything and not following the new norms.

According to new digital rules defined by the Indian government, companies that have more than 50 lakh users will mandatory to appoint a grievance officer, nodal officer, and chief compliance officer. These officers should be residents of India.

As per the report, Facebook & Whatsapp already shared their compliance report to the government and full detail of new grievance officers with new information updated on the website and platform replacing previous details. But, still, google is showing details of Joe Grier as a contact person on their contact us page with the address of Mountain View, US.
All social media platforms also need to release a mechanism by which a user can contact officers regarding their complaints.
There will be the responsibility of the grievance officer to acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and close the complaint with the solution in 15 days from the date of its receipt. Twitter has not sent any new information to the IT ministry and on their website, showing a lawyer working in a law firm as a nodal contact person and grievance officer. Twitter’s website mentioning the name of ‘Dharmendar Chatur’ as the Resident grievance officer in India (interim).
Other social media platforms like Koo, Telegram, LinkedIn, Sharechat, etc have also shared their grievance officer’s details with the IT ministry of the Government of India.
There are few more policies released under the law, such as social media companies need to take down any video or content within 24 hours that marked as nudity and pornography, etc.
The government stand is very clear that the new rules are implemented to prevent abuse and misuse of platforms, and offers a robust model of grievance resolution.
